Nordic Talks: Managing food waste for a sustainable future

With global hunger rising since 2014, reducing food loss and waste is critical. 13% of food is lost post-harvest, while 17% is wasted in households and retail. This squanders resources, fuels climate change (via landfill emissions), and raises food costs. Sustainable food systems demand global and local action, including technology, innovation, and better practices.

Hong Kong struggles with the problem of how to handle the 3,600 tons of unconsumed food that it produces every day on average. This huge amount of food being thrown away is not only wasteful but is also unsustainable. Reducing food waste is a sustainability issue for the climate and environment, but it is also a crucial step towards resilient food systems. However, the current situation of waste management in Hong Kong as well as in other Asian countries is not appealing and demands innovative and effective circular economy models to alleviate the pressing climate change issue.

This Talk aims to provide a platform for discussing how the different stakeholders in the community can prevent and reduce the food loss and waste, how can we accelerate the progress. The Talk will also share successful cases / innovations from the Nordic to provide insights for the formulation of strategies for the waste management industry in Hong Kong, inspire the industry and individuals to take urgent action to reduce food loss and waste.

Johan Thurée is the Market Manager Hong Kong at Business Sweden, working to help Swedish companies across sectors enter and grow their business in the Hong Kong and Greater Bay Area markets, and has also experience from working in Mainland China. Mr. Thurée is in his role also responsible in Hong Kong for Try Swedish, the Swedish food export program that helps connect Swedish food and beverage companies with global distributors and buyers in markets across the world, and has in his previous role in Mainland China amongst others led a Swedish F&B delegation to SIAL Shanghai.

Ms Carla Martinesi –  Founder & CEO, Chomp Limited

Carla is the Founder of CHOMP, Hong Kong’s award-winning food-saving app.

Having grown up in a mixed family, between Hong Kong and Switzerland and being surrounded by nature, she’s always had a strong belief in protecting the environment and ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come. With a background in F&B, she created CHOMP to make a difference in the world by addressing one of the most critical global issues: food waste. The app reduces food waste by connecting F&B businesses, like restaurants and cafes, with customers who can purchase discounted meal boxes containing unsold items. Since 2021, they’ve saved over 100,000 kg of edible food from going to landfills, partnering with 250+ establishments, including Maxim’s, Shangri-La, The Baker and The Bottleman, and more.

Carla is also a Forbes 30 Under 30 and Tatler’s Gen T. recipient for her work with CHOMP and continues to spread awareness about the importance of tackling food waste to help our planet.

Mr Samy Choi – Director, Envac Far East Ltd

Envac from Sweden is the original inventor and leader in Pneumatic Waste Collection System “PWCS” (aka ARCS in HK). Over the 30years of operating in Hong Kong, Envac has systems installed for Residential, Hospitals and Commercial uses. One of the most advanced system in Asia with integrated weighing function has been in operation at AIRSIDE. The New Acute Hospital in Kai Tak is also going to have one of biggest system Envac has ever installed in health care for general waste and soiled linen to assure a high hygiene standard for the general publics in Hong Kong. Samy Choi is the Director of Envac in HK and he covers the company business in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia.

Mr. Dennis Li – Sustainability Business Partner, DFI IKEA North Asia

Dennis Li is the Sustainability Business Partner at DFI IKEA North Asia. Before joining IKEA, he gained experience across the health and beauty, food, and convenience retail sectors in both Canada and Hong Kong.

Ms. Aurea Yung – Head of Operations, Foodlink Foundation (Updated)

A graduate in Hospitality, Food & Tourism Management, Aurea began her career in the hospitality industry by working in various sectors such as tourism, members clubs, foodservice operation, and hotels. Her outstanding achievements led her to being awarded a scholarship by the Hong Kong Hotels Association, which allowed her to further develop her skills in Hawaii.

Driven by her passion for philanthropy, Aurea joined Foodlink Foundation as a volunteer in 2015, and with her dedication and commitment, became an official member in 2017. She contributes to the organization in multiple ways, from fundraising, donors and partners engagement, organizing CSR events, and actively participating in community service activities. She is also devoted to educating the younger generation about food waste reduction and waste upcycling initiatives.
